Blending and Type

Original Lock

f/4.5, 1/80, Apr/27/11, ISO 400, Nikon D5000, Rexburg, Idaho

I set the camera down on the cement and used the auto-timer to make sure that I didn’t bump it so that it would turn out clearly.

Rusty Lock

I wanted to use the overlay of a rust texture to create a realistically rusty lock and to create a crack in the cement. I was going forĀ  realism over dramatic effect. You’ll note that the original doesn’t have any rust at all. I took two texture shots of my rusty stairway and also of some cracks in the stairs. I used a combination of the overlay blending mode and masks to put them in the picture. I also used a gradient in a quick mask and a lens blur filter to make the crack have a similar amount of bokeh.

f/4.5, 1/60, Apr/27/11, ISO 400, Nikon D5000, Rexburg, Idaho

I overlaid the text over one of my texture shots of rust and then rasterized it, rotated it and skewed it to fit onto the ridge in the metal.

The washed out rust was a levels adjustment layer and the lines came from a mask.
